Asexual and aromantic-spectrum experiences are often left out, even within queer communities and research. Because of that, a lot of people, including therapists, have limited understanding about them. Fresh Path NYtherapists have an expansive conceptualisation about asexuality and aromanticism, including the importance and limitations of micro-lables and amatonormativity. We make space for the unique issues faced by ace/aro folx in their lives, the challenges to feeling safe/understood by the field of therapy and clinicians, and how intersecting identities, such as race, neurodivergence and disability, age, gender etc., impact clients’ experiences. We have an understanding of why it is important to have awareness and these conversations; not just for ace aro clients, but also for allo folx, because ace aro discord provides so many helpful and unique approaches to life and relationships.
How we conceptualize Asexuality and Aromanticism:
What Does A Session Look Like?
- Having a therapist who validates your ace/aro experiences, offers informed support, and helps guide exploration in directions that serve you and not just amatonormative beliefs
- A balance between your therapist having nuanced knowledge about your identities, and making space to explore your unique experiences
- Your therapist having knowledge about resources and research available
- Your therapist being able to offer non-allo/amatonormative perspectives to relationship & community-building, and ways to combat loneliness
